CT Dems statement on the 80th anniversary of Social Security
Connecticut Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto released the following statement:
“80 years after President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, it remains one of the most effective programs in the history of our nation, a promise that a lifetime of work would be rewarded with a dignified retirement. Today, over 59 million people – including retired workers and people with disabilities – receive Social Security benefits, keeping millions of people out of poverty.
“Despite Social Security’s success, today’s Republican Party – including its leading presidential candidates – is working hard to dismantle it. Jeb Bush steadfastly supported his brother’s plan to privatize Social Security. Chris Christie has campaigned to raise the retirement age. And Rand Paul wants to take benefits away from people with disabilities.
“Fortunately, Connecticut’s Democratic congressional delegation has been fighting to preserve social security for retirees today and in the future.”
