HOW TO VOTE IN CONNECTICUT

There are three ways to vote in Connecticut:

  • In-person on Election Day
  • In-person during the early voting period
  • By Absentee Ballot, if you meet one of the requirements (see below)
In-person on Election Day

Check your registration and look up your polling place here. Voting takes place from 6 am to 8 pm on Election Day. You may be asked to provide identification. In Connecticut, you can show a photo ID or a Social Security card, a preprinted piece of mail (like a utility bill or bank statement), or a paycheck that shows your name and address. See the full list of acceptable ID.

If you are not registered to vote for the November general election, you can register and cast a ballot on Election Day at a specific location in your town (usually town or city hall). That list will be updated for 2024.

In-person during the early voting period

In 2022, Connecticut voters approved in-person early voting, making us the 47th state to offer that option. This is the first year it will be an option in Connecticut. The days for early voting vary by election type (see chart above).

Each city and town in Connectciut has a designated location for early voting. Most are at Town or City Hall (but check to be sure!). This is probably different from your normal polling place. You can fin your town’s polling place here: CT Early Voting Poll Locations

Using an Absentee Ballot

Click here for more information on Absentee Ballot use in CT.

You may request and use an absentee ballot if you meet any of the restrictions listed below. This year, there will be a question on your ballot to allow Connecticut to remove those restrictions, and permit you to request and use an absentere ballot if you prefer. The CT Dems recommend a YES vote on this question.

In 2024, you may vote by Absentee Ballot only if you can answer “yes” to one of these questions:

  • Are you an active member of the armed forces of the United States?
  • Will you be out of town on Election Day?
  • Does sickness* prevent you from voting in person on Election Day?
  • Do your religious beliefs prevent you from performing secular activities like voting on Election Day?
  • Will you be performing duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own on Election Day?
  • Does a physical disability prevent you from voting in person on election day?

* “Sickness” used here means either you are too ill to vote in person, or you believe that the chance of getting sick (from COVID or any other sickness) prevents you from voting in person.

You may request an application for an absentee ballot here. You can return your absentee ballot by mail, in person at your Town Clerk’s office, or by using the official drop box, usually located outside town or city hall.
