CT DEMS TO CT GOP: SILENCE SPEAKS VOLUMES

Hartford, Ct. – Hartford, Ct. – Connecticut Democratic Party Executive Director Michael Mandell released the following statement.

For the past two weeks, Connecticut’s residents have demonstrated what it means to be active citizens in our democracy. They have risen up and gathered to protest the actions and values championed by President Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington D.C. Tens of thousands of Connecticut citizens have called their elected officials, shared stories of the pain inflicted by the Trump agenda, and shown up to rallies and demonstrations in record numbers.

Through it all, however, the Connecticut Republican Party and its elected officials locally and statewide have stood silent on the sidelines. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” The Connecticut Republicans’ silence speaks volumes.

Make no mistake: Republican leaders in Hartford assert that they should be trusted to lead the General Assembly, but, when our most vulnerable citizens turn to the capital, they are hearing, with few exceptions, from Democrats.

And then there are the Republicans exploring a run for governor. Their lack of engagement with or even empathy for those affected by these issues demonstrates their lack of leadership. As they “explore” what it means to be Connecticut’s Chief Executive, they excuse themselves from any discussions on the values that define our nation and how we look after all of our diverse communities. Their silence clearly states, however, that they intend to run as allies and validators for President Donald Trump’s agenda in the highest office in Connecticut.
