Senior Communications Advisor
Job Description: The Senior Communications Advisor for the Connecticut Democratic Party works closely with the Executive Director, Party Chair, senior staff, elected officials, candidates, allied organizations, and key supporters to shape and execute the Party’s communications strategy for the 2026 gubernatorial race.
This position is responsible for driving earned media coverage, clearly communicating the Party’s message, coordinating and deploying surrogates and supporters, and holding Republican gubernatorial candidates accountable. This is an on-the-record role and includes oversight of both internal and external communications, message development, strategic planning, press conferences and responses, event execution as needed, and engagement with state and national media.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the 2026 Connecticut gubernatorial race and the Connecticut Democratic Party.
- Develop, implement, and oversee short- and long-term communications and messaging strategies aligned with campaign and party goals.
- Draft and manage internal messaging, including guidance for staff, leadership, candidates, surrogates, and key supporters to ensure message discipline and consistency.
- Recruit, brief, and manage surrogates and supporters, including elected officials, candidates, community leaders, and coalition partners; prepare them with talking points, background materials, and rapid-response guidance.
- Plan and oversee press events, including press conferences, media availabilities, press calls, and creative earned media opportunities across the state.
- Draft media materials such as press releases, statements, talking points, op-eds, digital content, and briefing documents.
- Develop and pitch proactive and reactive story ideas to reporters across Connecticut.
- Respond to media inquiries and manage reporter relationships.
- Monitor news coverage, opposition messaging, and political developments; provide rapid response and opposition research-driven messaging as needed.
- Work with senior staff to manage high-stakes or difficult communications situations, including crisis communications.
- Coordinate with allied organizations and stakeholders to align messaging and amplify campaign and party priorities.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- 3+ years of experience in political communications, preferably including at least one statewide campaign cycle or local campaign experience.
- Demonstrated on-the-record spokesperson experience.
- A proven track record of executing creative and effective earned media campaigns.
- Experience managing and communicating with multiple stakeholders, including campaigns, party leadership, elected officials, and outside allies.
- Strong writing and message-development skills, including the ability to draft internal guidance and external-facing materials quickly and accurately.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure campaign environment with flexible hours.
- Familiarity with Connecticut politics and media is a plus.
