In a press release this morning, GOP congressional candidate Clay Cope accused Rep. Elizabeth Esty of supporting Hillary Clinton (fact check: true). Yet while Congresswoman Esty has made her choice in the presidential race clear, Cope has refused to say if he will support Republican standard-bearer Donald Trump when he is the GOP nominee.
“If Clay Cope wants to make presidential politics an issue this election, voters of the fifth district deserve to know exactly where he stands on his party’s front-runner. Will he ignore Donald Trump’s racist, hateful and bigoted policies, and join the chorus of Republicans around the country promising to ‘support the nominee’?
“Connecticut voters understand that Donald Trump’s policies are as hollow as a degree from Trump University. Meanwhile, Democratic candidates are engaged in substantive policy debate about how to move our country forward. The choice seems clear to us. It’s time for Clay Cope to level with fifth district voters and make his feelings known.” – Connecticut Democratic Party spokesman Leigh Appleby
