GOP Targets Planned Parenthood, CT Dems Stand Up

Yesterday Republicans in the United States Senate – thanks to a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence – voted to give states the authority to strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood.

Today Connecticut Democrats are standing up and promising to defend Planned Parenthood funding from constant GOP attacks.

“For so many women, Planned Parenthood is their only resource for mammograms; clinical breast, pap, and pelvic exams; and other lifesaving health services,” said State Senator Marilyn Moore (D-Bridgeport). “Generally, a visit to Planned Parenthood is the only time that women – especially young women –  may use any type of health screenings that may identify other reproductive health issues that could be treated at a preventative stage.”

“The Republicans’ vote in the United States Senate to deny funding for Planned Parenthood will put women’s lives at risk,” Sen. Moore continued. “Democrats in Connecticut will hold true to our values and fight back against this malicious assault on women’s health care.”

“The Republican-led assault on women’s health and Planned Parenthood will fail in Connecticut, if we have anything to say about it,” said Rep. Cathy Abercrombie (D-Meriden), the House chair of the legislature’s Human Services Committee. “Governor Malloy has already vowed to make sure that Connecticut makes up the difference in funding if Congress defunds Planned Parenthood, and I am also fighting to preserve critical funding for women’s health and welfare.”

Connecticut Democrats have a long history of supporting Planned Parenthood and women’s health services. Meanwhile, Connecticut Republicans have remained silent, refusing to stand up to President Trump or the congressional GOP majorities.

“On issue after issue – from stripping health care from 24 million people, to eliminating heating assistance for low-income Connecticut residents, to yet another attempt to dismantle women’s health services – Connecticut Republicans have failed to stand up for the people of this state,” said Connecticut Democratic Party Vice Chairwoman Dita Bhargava. “State and local governments are the last line of defense against the Trump administration’s backwards agenda. That’s why we’re working so hard to elect Democrats — to defend Connecticut’s values.”

This is not just Democrats talking. Editorial boards agree that Connecticut Republicans need to grow a backbone and stand up to the Trump agenda.

Limitless Incompetence

In response to the Connecticut Republican Party’s wildly misleading press release (Connecticut actually moved up two spots over 2016’s Best & Worst States for Doctors list), the Connecticut Democratic Party released the following statement.

“Speaking of limitless incompetence, spending seven years promising to repeal the Affordable Care and strip health coverage from 24 million people, only to fail spectacularly, ranks right up at the top.” – Connecticut Democratic Party Executive Director Michael Mandell

CT Dems’ Reaction To TumpCare

Hartford, Ct. – Connecticut Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto released the following statement.

“Democrats from across Connecticut and around the country came together to make their voices heard against this backwards proposal. We will use this grassroots energy to continue to stand against President Donald Trump’s anti-Connecticut agenda. It’s time for GOP leaders in the state who supported Trump’s campaign to stop leading from behind.”

VIDEO: TrumpCare Would Hurt Real People

In a web video released today, Connecticut Democrats are highlighting the real impact TrumpCare would have on everyday residents and calling out Connecticut Republicans for failing to stand up to President Trump as he proposes policies that attack Connecticut’s values. In fact, just yesterday, legislative Republicans failed to sign on to a Democratic effort urging President Trump to abandon his bill that would – according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office – strip health coverage from 24 million Americans, instead opting to send a watered-down letter of their own, calling on national Republicans only to take their time before passing the bill.

Video Transcript:

Mr. President.
Mr. President.
President Trump.
You promised a health care plan that gives every person access to the health care that they need.
I’m going to take care of everybody. I don’t care it costs me votes or not. Everybody is going to be taken care of, much better than they’re taken care of now.
Let’s be real. This plan doesn’t do anything that you promised.
In fact, it cuts health care for 24 million Americans. Those aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet. They’re real people. People like me.
People like me.
People like me.
The Affordable Care Act made it possible for me to access the care and prescription drugs I would not otherwise be able to access. This TrumpCare plan would make it much harder for me to get the care that I need.
It would cost real people more money. Just in Connecticut, premiums would increase by $700 to $1000 in 2018. Instead of repealing the ACA,
Republicans should work with Democrats to improve the law for everyone.
Connecticut Republicans, you supported Donald Trump
It’s time for you to stand up and hold President Trump accountable.
We need you, Connecticut Republicans, to have our back and protect our care.
