CT Dems’ Statements On Trump’s Speech

Hartford, Ct. – Connecticut Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto and Vice Chairwoman Dita Bhargava released the following statements.

“If tonight’s goal was to hit the reset button after a disastrous start to his presidency, Donald Trump utterly failed,” said Balletto. “The agenda this president has outlined not only runs counter to our values as a nation, but is also dangerous. His immigration policy will make our communities less safe and tear families apart. Another ill-conceived Muslim ban will target law-abiding people while playing into the hands of terrorists’ recruiting strategies. And stripping health coverage from millions of people will literally cost lives.

“The best way to stop Trump’s dangerous agenda is to elect Democrats who will stand up for our values in 2017 and 2018. As we have seen at town halls across the country, and, as was evidenced by increased Democratic turnout in tonight’s special elections, our party is fired up and ready to organize.”

Tonight I was proud as our congressional delegation invited guests who represent Connecticut’s inclusive spirit in the face of President Trump’s backwards and hateful agenda,” said Bhargava. “An Afghan interpreter and refugee, a Jordanian native who was detained because of Trump’s failed Muslim ban, an Iraqi-American who fled sectarian violence, a hospital president advocating for the Affordable Care Act, a college president training the next generation of Connecticut workers, a school principal committed to the future of public education, and a police chief dedicated to strengthening our nation’s gun laws – all of these people represent the best of the state of Connecticut and the Democratic Party. I want to thank our delegation for standing up for Connecticut’s values.”

CT Dems’ Statement On Special Elections

Hartford, Ct. – Connecticut Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto released the following statement.

Tonight’s election results show just how fired up Connecticut Democrats are. In a deep-red district that Republicans carried by 35 points in 2016, Democrats organized, got out the vote, and made it a competitive race. While Greg Cava came up short, make no mistake: Democrats across Connecticut are sickened by Donald Trump’s attacks on our values and are ready to get to work on 2017 and 2018 elections. With the influx of activism across our state at rallies and meetings, the Connecticut Democratic Party is demonstrating that we will continue to harness that energy into electoral contests and into holding legislators and GOP elected officials responsible for their silence in the face of Trump’s backwards agenda.

“I want to congratulate Democratic Senator-elect Doug McCrory and Representative-elect Dorinda Borer on their strong campaigns. I am fully confident that they will represent their communities well.”

CT Dems’ Statement On Donald Trump’s Inauguration

Hartford, Ct. – Connecticut Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto released the following statement.

“We wish President Trump the best as he begins his term, but we remain deeply concerned by the rhetoric and policy proposals he and his cabinet picks have espoused. Despite partisan differences, we root for America’s success and for opportunity and prosperity for our fellow citizens.

“Make no mistake, however, Democrats will stand up and be heard as we fight for continued progress. I hope there are areas where Democrats and Republicans can find common ground. However, if President Trump goes forward with the extreme agenda he pushed during his campaign and transition, Democrats stand ready to resist him not just legislatively, but at the grassroots level.

“This is because, rather than draining the swamp as he promised, his top nominees are billionaires, millionaires, and Washington insiders. Instead of embracing an agenda to help working people, he plans to strip health care from 30 million people, oppose an increase in the minimum wage, and dismantle our nation’s education system.

“Democrats know what it takes to stand strong in support of our values, as was clear from dozens of Democratic Community Captains, who came together from across the state last night in Hartford to get organized, from the rallies and demonstrations being seen across Connecticut in recent days and weeks, and from our Democratic elected officials making their voices heard on critical issues here in Connecticut and in confirmation hearings in Washington DC. Rest assured, we will have the organization necessary to hold the Connecticut Republicans supporting the Trump agenda accountable.”

CT Dems Elect Executive Committee

Hartford, Ct. – The Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC) this evening elected party officers. Chairman Nick Balletto of Guilford and Treasurer Josh Hall of Hartford were unanimously re-elected to a second term, while Dita Bhargava of Greenwich was elected vice chairwoman and Eva Bermudez of Newtown was elected secretary.

Governor Dan Malloy, Lt. Governor Wyman, and members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation congratulated the newly elected officers and thanked outgoing Vice Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo and Secretary Barbara Gordon, both of whom decided not to seek re-election.

“I am proud of the work that Nick Balletto, Nancy DiNardo, and the team at the state party have done over the past two years,” said Governor Malloy. “They have made unprecedented investments in building a top-notch grassroots organization, and it has paid off. I want to congratulate Nick and his team on their elections and thank Nancy and Barbara for their extraordinary leadership over the years.”

“Nick has been an outstanding leader for the Democratic Party,” said Lt. Governor Wyman. “I know that serving as party chair is a tough, often thankless job, but the State Central Committee made the right decision to keep Nick on for the next two years. Although they will be missed in their current roles, I also know that Barbara Gordon and Nancy DiNardo will continue to serve the party and the state going forward.”

“Dita Bhargava is an excellent choice to serve as state party vice chairwoman,” said U.S. Rep. Jim Himes. “I have gotten to know her as a community leader in Greenwich, and I can tell you from experience that she has the leadership skills to be highly effective in her new role. With Donald Trump preparing to take the oath of office, we need Democrats who will hold him – and the Republicans supporting his agenda – accountable. Dita will do just that.”

“I want to congratulate my friend Eva Bermudez,” said U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty. “Eva is a stellar public servant who works tirelessly on behalf of Newtown. She has spent her career advocating for the rights of working people and knows how to win the tough fights. Eva is well-suited to serve as the secretary of the state party, which will benefit from her voice and her boundless energy.”

Chairman Balletto and Vice Chairwoman Bhargava offered their thanks to the State Central Committee and to Democrats throughout the state.

“Serving as party chair has been a tremendous honor, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to continue serving,” said Balletto. “Our new executive committee, party staff, and volunteers are ready to hit the ground running, contacting voters and holding Donald Trump and the Republicans supporting his agenda accountable. We are already engaged in unprecedented efforts to engage grassroots supporters and lay the groundwork for critical 2017 and 2018 elections.

“I want to give special thanks to Nancy DiNardo and Josh Hall,” he continued. “Nancy has given me incredible guidance and support over the past two years. I know that she will continue to be a great resource for the state party in her new role as a Democratic National Committee member. And Josh has been an incredible asset to the party in his role as treasurer. I am immensely grateful that he will continue his service.”

“I want to thank the DSCC for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity and responsibility,” said Bhargava.  Connecticut Democrats are already working tirelessly to build a grassroots organization and expand our ranks with new voices and faces that ensure we are ready to compete in 2017 and 2018. We will hold the Connecticut Republicans supporting the Trump administration’s extreme agenda accountable. I look forward to getting right to work.”
